I led a group of about 35 Semester at Sea folk from our port city of Madras on a 4 day/3 night trip to New Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. I think the reason many of the people made the trek with us was the opportunity to visit the infamous Taj Mahal. |
I think the hardest part of getting 35 people safely from Madras out to Delhi and back to Madras all within 96 hours was getting them all lined up for this picture. |
Everywhere we went we saw animals wandering the streets of India. In our short time, we saw horses, camels, pigs, boars, cows, water buffalo, bears, ostriches, monkeys, and more. One of the more interesting sights was a man running down the street after his runaway elephant. |

Speaking of elephants, we had the opportunity to use the local transportation to make a trip to the ancient citadel atop the hill in Amber.
Believe it or not, more tourists visit the Lotus temple of the Bahai faith than visit the Taj Mahal. The Taj is a bit out of the way in Agra, but the Lotus temple is easier to reach, so almost everyone who goes to New Delhi visits here. |

Here are a few of the students from our trip. They're so happy. |
Back in Madras, Julie and I wandered around the city finding fun and adventure. Somehow we ended up at the Kapaleeswarar Temple and met this man who told us a bit of the history of the temple. |
After leaving India, we had 10 or 12 days until our next stop in Israel. The long stretch was broken up by a day of wacky "Un-Olympics" which included some competitive sports (basketball, soccer) as well as some more goofy activities (name that soup, surprise pie). The olympics were kicked off by a lip synch contest the night before. Here's a pic of the winning team--the faculty/staff (and yes, that's yours truly center stage).
My sea didn't do all that well in the standings for the games, but we had a lot of fun. Here's many of my "Club Med" team the morning of the big day. |
The night before the ship made its way up the Suez Canal, most of the RDs stayed out all night under the stars (except one that shall remain nameless, 'cuz I don't want to single any Juan out). And then we got to see the sun come up on the canal. |
